United way
Industry:
Not for Profit
Description:
United Way of Allegheny County is one of 1,900 local, independent United Ways across the country working to
improve the quality of life for people in their communities. United Way of Allegheny County is a not-for-profit
organization, which seeks to measurably improve the quality of life for those in need in the community. The
primary activities of United Way are: 1. Raise funds through the annual campaign to sustain a core network of
high quality human service programs for children and adults. Also to raise funds to address issues of importance
to the community such as early childhood education and youth violence. These funds are set aside to achieve
time-limited objectives and are raised through partnerships and collaboration. 2. Encourage and facilitate
volunteers to assist those in need, directly or indirectly. 3. Provide information by telephone and the
Internet to people who need help locating resources and services.
Solution:
The UWAC web site, designed and implemented by Symphony Interactive and hosted by Expedient
Communications, is a community service portal that will allow supporters to donate online and creates an
Internet forum to bring together people in need with those offering assistance. While some local United Ways
in the U.S. offer online giving, United Way of Allegheny County is the first to Web-enable a regional health
and human services data base and volunteer system. Expedient is responsible for supporting the infrastructure
necessary to deliver the web site. The infrastructure includes 6 Sun Microsystems servers, Cisco load balancing
technology, Expedient's Managed Firewall Service powered by CheckPoint, EMC Enterprise Storage, Managed Backup
and Restore services, Advanced Monitoring and 24 x 7 Client Care support. This solution is colocated in Expedient's
Pittsburgh Data Center and has been in continuous operation since November of 2000.
